When first launched back in 2012, Porsche once again began whole new debates over its latest model lineup, focussing on the 991 in particular, some motoring journos were left underwhelmed, and the feedback from the fans said it was losing its way and becoming "just another modern car" fast forward 10 years and we are all talking about fried egg headlights being cool, bright colours being back in fashion and manual cars are still everyone’s favourite choice.
So where did it all go wrong? Our thoughts point towards there now being so many options, and if not specified carefully you can build a bland and slightly boring car - and at a price higher than we have ever had to spend before... it doesn’t stack up.
Moving back to the 996 or 997's quickly, a basic C2 or standard C4S were always great cars, tick just the suspension box and short shift option alone and you have a real driver. Maybe some music and decent headlights and that is all you really needed. Less was certainly more back in those days as the standard car was good already.
But does this formula work with the 991 generation? On a Cayman or Boxster, we say yes, but choosing a 991 with no options and the slightly asthmatic 3.4 powerplant would is a disappointing place to be.
The 991 era opened the door to a whole new world of technology, rear wheel steering, torque vectoring, super-fast double clutch transmissions, big aero packages, we digress toward the amazing GT and Turbo products, now these are incredible bits of machinery showing what the 991 is really capable of, but do we really need or want all of that, all of the time? No, on track or the autobahn maybe, but in the real world we just want to get out and enjoy an involving drive.
Enter this very understated C2S we currently have for sale. Pure and simple, yet inspiring and exciting. In our opinion this must be the 964 RS of its time (Trying to ignore the 911 R and GT3 touring due to their already eye watering values)
So is this perfect recipe for a proper driving "modern" 911, we feel it could be...
The 3.8 Dfi unit is the one to have, the 7 speed manual is involving, and who wants to be bogged down by the weight of a sunroof anyway, but is that enough? nearly, with the cars ultimately being designed around the 20" alloys you need these too, then the PASM option to settle that chassis, add in the 40% locking differential and a switchable sports exhaust system and all of a sudden you start remembering the 993 RS you meant to buy instead of that new 996.
To begin with this car might just look and feel like "another 991", and the subtle ruby red coachwork certainly tricks one into thinking it is tame, but once you start to drive it, you quickly realise how good it is, more compliant on the road than a GTS, lighter and more chuckable than a turbo, that glorious naturally aspirated flat 6 allowing you to explore the rev range in all 7 gears, it really is an enjoyable and surely future classic.
With just two former keepers from new (the 1st being an OPC), a full main agent service history and still under a Porsche warranty, there can’t be many 911's at this price point that can compete.
We welcome viewings and test drives by appointment and can arrange competitive finance and delivery nationwide.
