In our opinion this model always has, and always will be one of the best 911 Turbos ever built, it is the last evolution of the famous Metzger engine (Not found in the later 997.2 Turbo with DFi) and we are certain this will stand the test of time better than the aforementioned MA1 variety.
Why the best?
As with every new model, in general, it is usually an improvement from the last, however in more recent years with tightening emissions laws, driver safety systems and general manufacturing costs, we don’t believe our latest era of cars are quite so well built or robust.
It is undeniable that the advances in CAD technology and manufacturing processes has come on leaps and bounds, and that clever computers allow even the most ham fisted driver to steer like a pro, but this has led to finer tolerances, cheaper materials, and overall heavier cars.
The 997 Turbo was a dramatic improvement over the former 996 in regards to looks and performance but still manages to retain the delicacy and feel of its narrower bodied counterpart. It also retains the wonderful hydraulic steering, simple yet effective chassis set up and can still be maintained and serviced with relative ease.
The new 991 was certainly everything we knew and more, but maybe too much more, rear wheel steering, active anti roll bars, torque vectoring, launch control, all clever in their own right but maybe more focused at the playstation generation, and above all, more to go wrong, and more to overall detract from the driving experience.
In short, this has to be the last 911 Turbo that can honestly trace its routes and component design back to the 930 and 964 Turbo era. Granted it utilises clever variable vane turbocharger technology, active PASM dampers, and of course 4wd with ABS and traction control, but none of these are ground breaking computer aided assistants as found in the 991, meaning you are still the captain at the helm and there is certainly no autopilot option!
First born in Stuttgart and completed on the 27th of May 2008, it sailed its way to Porsche Centre Swindon and was first registered on the 11th of June that year.
