Most recently purchased by a Mr Burningham from the Gullwing motor company in New York
It was destined to come home with him back to the UK, and began its new life here in March 2014
Prior to purchasing the car for $101000 Mr Burningham instructed Steve Linden of Smithtown NY to carry out a detailed pre purchase inspection report
It came back sounding very promising and only really identifying minor wear and tear and smaller defects to the car
It was also noted that the engine number P73501 was correct for the year and a T2 Cabriolet
With a positive sounding report, chassis number 152030 was promptly purchased and imported back to the UK via CARS UK Ltd
Not long after finally taking delivery Mr B decided to find a marque specialist to check the car over and advise on any improvements
Fortunately, and unfortunately for his wallet, he found PR Services – one of the best and most passionate 356 restorers in the county.
Without going into too much detail, it was decided the car needed a full bare metal restoration plus a full engine overhaul to make it one of the finest examples
They also noted that the engine case was not matching to the car, but was indeed correct for the year and even the model
When the car arrived it was black, with a black roof and black interior
With the option to change the colour during the process, no hesitation was made to change to metallic silver coachwork and then complemented by a full red leather retrim with all new correct carpets to match.
In excess of £80000 was spent on the refurbishment and Mr Burningham had to patiently wait over 2 years for the work to be completed
Finally, in stunning condition and exactly how he could have dreamt, he has had some wonderful times in the car
It is with great regret that he is having to let it go to fund a new house project and someone will be very lucky to take ownership and save the 2 year wait and unexpected costs of a restoration
